Wall Street indices fell sharply overnight due to protests in China and the possibility of an economic slowdown as a result of stricter policies implemented in response to rising Covid cases in China. Asian indices, on the other hand, roared into the session.
The Indian benchmark indices opened slightly higher but quickly soared, powered by gains in FMCG stocks. BSE Fast Moving Consumer Goods was the top performing sector, gaining 1.73 per cent, led by BCL Industries.
Shares of BCL Industries soared more than 16 per cent on a 9-fold increase in volume, making it the top gainer on the BSE Smallcap index, whereas the BSE Smallcap index fell sharply after trading flat and ended the session 0.29 per cent lower. The stocks with the highest turnover on the BSE today were Indian Railway Finance Corporation and Rail Vikas Nigam.
At 3:30 pm, the BSE Sensex gained 0.28 per cent, reaching a level of 62,681. The Nifty 50 index added 0.30 per cent to the 18,618 level. On the Sensex, Hindustan Unilever, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Nestle India were the Top Gainers, whereas IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv and Maruti Suzuki were the Top Losers.
