The Wall Street rally appeared to have slowed. Despite positive economic data, investors remained cautious due to the Federal Reserve's aggressive remarks and stricter regulations in China as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
While Wall Street indices dropped overnight, Asian markets today experienced an optimistic investor mood. The Indian benchmark indices were on the upswing, driven by gains in commodities, consumer durables and FMCG sectors.
At 11:55 am, the BSE Sensex gained 0.28 per cent, reaching a level of 61,318. The Nifty 50 index climbed 0.30 per cent to the 18,213 level. On the Sensex, IndusInd Bank, UltraTech Cement and Titan were the Top Gainers, whereas Nestle India, Power Grid Corporation of India and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the Top Losers.
While the BSE Midcap index rose in step with the main indices, the BSE Smallcap index was trading flat. Following the stock split and bonus issue, shares of Easy Trip Planners, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, soared over 15 per cent and traded at 52-week high. Heavy buying was seen in the shares of Kopran Ltd and Hi-Tech Pipes as well.
