Shares of Skipper Ltd, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, were locked at 20 per cent upper circuit, keeping bulls in the small-cap pack busy.
After falling for prior two sessions, Wall Street indices managed to end Friday's session higher. Major retailers reporting strong quarter results and investors digesting hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve were the main driving forces behind the late-afternoon rally.
Fears about China's new Covid-19 restrictions, on the other hand, triggered a significant downturn in Asian markets and a drop in oil prices on Monday.
Indian headline indices opened weaker in response to disappointing Asian market cues, while the IT, energy and oil & gas sectors contributed significantly to the decline. The only gaining sector was BSE Telecommunications, which was primarily boosted by more than 8 per cent gains in shares of Optiemus Infracom.
At 12:25 pm, the BSE Sensex plunged 0.84 per cent, reaching a level of 61,146. The Nifty 50 index slipped 0.84 per cent to the 18,153 level. On the Sensex, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever and Axis Bank were the Top Gainers, whereas Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC and Bajaj Finance were the Top Losers.
The BSE Smallcap index gained despite declines in main indices. Shares of Skipper Ltd, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, were locked at 20 per cent upper circuit, keeping bulls in the Small-Cap pack busy. Shares of UCO Bank and Swan Energy also experienced significant buying.
