With the help of encouraging economic data and sizable retail earnings from Walmart Inc, among other retailers, Wall Street indices ended the session higher overnight, recouping the losses from the previous day.
Asian markets were in a mixed mood as geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine remained high and world leaders gathered in Bali, Indonesia, for the second day of the Group of 20 summit. Indian benchmark indices started off in the red but were able to cut their initial losses to trade higher.
At 11:25 am, the BSE Sensex gained 0.20 per cent, reaching a level of 61,998. The Nifty 50 index advanced 0.13 per cent to the 18,427 level. On the Sensex, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Wipro were the Top Gainers, whereas Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance and NTPC Ltd were the Top Losers.
The majority of sectors were trading lower, with BSE Metals taking the biggest hit with losses of over 1 per cent while BSE IT and BSE Teck attempted to boost markets with their modest gains. With more than 8-fold rise in volume, shares of Housing & Urban Development Corporation, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, soared over 12 per cent and reached a new 52-week high.
