The losses in the BSE Oil & Gas, BSE Energy and BSE IT sectors caused the Indian headline indices to open the week lower amid conflicting global cues. The losing sectors subsequently started to trim their losses as BSE Metals battled to lift the indices upward.
The top-performing sector was BSE Metals, which recorded gains of 2.37 per cent, led by a rise of over 4 per cent in shares of Hindalco Industries. Main indices were able to recoup the earlier losses as a result and the session ended marginally lower.
At 3:30 pm, the BSE Sensex edged down by 0.05 per cent, reaching a level of 62,834. The Nifty 50 index lost 0.02 per cent to the 18,701 level. On the Sensex, Tata Steel, NTPC Ltd and State Bank of India were the Top Gainers, whereas Reliance Industries, Tech Mahindra and UltraTech Cement Company were the Top Losers.
