Sensex, Nifty volatile; trending stock Vodafone Idea zooms 30 per cent, Page Industries dips 3 per cent
On Thursday, Sensex ended at 38,990.94 levels after declining by 95.09 points or 0.24 per cent. Nifty closed flat with a positive bias at 11,535.75 levels, up by a mere 0.01 per cent or 0.75 points. The domestic markets fluctuated between minor gains and losses throughout the trading session on Thursday. While India VIX dropped by nearly 3 per cent to 20.53 levels.
Despite being doubtful over the survival of Vodafone Idea after the announcement of AGR dues repayment, the company’s shares soared by nearly 30 per cent on BSE today. This came as a development on the back of a fundraising announcement by the company as well as of probable investment by the US wireless carrier Verizon Communications Inc and Amazon.com Inc.
The shares of Page Industries slipped during today’s trading session after the company reported a net loss of Rs 39.55 crore for Q1FY21 as against a net profit of Rs 110.67 crore gained in Q1FY20.
Boosting investors’ sentiments on the hopes of more global and domestic economic stimulus, Japan's Nikkei share average hit a six-month high on Thursday and reached its highest level in three decades in dollar terms. Nikkei gained by 0.94 per cent, Shanghai index slipped by 0.58 per cent while Hang Seng fell by 0.45 per cent. South Korea’s KOSPI climbed 1.33 per cent. Meanwhile, European markets were trading in green with FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40, being up by 0.91 per cent, 1.22 per cent and 1.72 per cent, respectively.
Sensex gainers consisted of Titan Company, which went up by 5.71 per cent, Tech Mahindra rose by 3.16 per cent, Nestle India gained by 2.46 per cent, Maruti Suzuki increased by 2.19 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries gained by 1.69 per cent, etc.
Sensex losers included ICICI Bank that went down by 2.42 per cent, Bharti Airtel fell by 2.23 per cent, Axis Bank slipped by 2.02 per cent, Kotak Mahindra Bank declined by 1.64 per cent, Power Grid plunged by 1.57 per cent, etc.
Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, Consumer Durables index zoomed by 3.53 per cent, followed by IT index and TECK index gaining by 1.48 per cent and 1.35 per cent, respectively. BSE Bankex, BSE Metal index, and BSE Finance index closed in red, down by 1.42 per cent, 0.91 per cent and 0.90 per cent, respectively.
The broader markets continued to outperform domestic benchmark indices as BSE Small-Cap index gained by 0.74 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 0.40 per cent.
