Sensex, Nifty volatile; Affle India & Aarti Drugs lock in at upper circuit, IndusInd Bank jumps 5 per cent

On Monday, the domestic benchmark indices witnessed volatility. India VIX was up by 6.02 per cent. Sensex gained by 194.90 points or 0.44 per cent to close at 44,077.15 levels while Nifty was up by 67.40 points or 0.52 per cent at 12,926.45 levels.

During the day, both the benchmark indices touched their fresh record highs after a nervous early morning trading session. Meanwhile, mid-cap and small-cap stocks outperformed the benchmark indices.

While banking stocks declined, IT stocks witnessed strong investor interest.

After CCI approved the RIL-Future Group deal, the shares of RIL as well as of the companies belonging to Future Group reported significant gains.

In the global markets, Asian indices such as Shanghai index, Hang Seng, and KOSPI gained by 1.09 per cent, 0.13 per cent, and 1.92 per cent, respectively whereas Nikkei fell by 0.42 per cent. European indices such as FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40 were trading in the green, up by 0.31 per cent, 0.91 per cent, and 0.75 per cent, respectively.

Crude oil prices rose as traders hoped for a positive recovery in crude demand after successful Coronavirus vaccine trials boosted overall confidence globally.

Amid buying sentiments in the domestic equity markets, the Indian rupee was trading marginally higher at 74.10 per dollar, erasing early losses.

Sensex gainers included ONGC that went up by 6.84 per cent, IndusInd Bank rose by 4.79 per cent, Infosys gained by 3.37 per cent, Tech Mahindra jumped 3.33 per cent, Bajaj Finserv gained by 2.78 per cent, RIL increased by 2.72 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of HDFC that went down by 3.55 per cent, ICICI Bank plunged 2.46 per cent, Axis Bank fell by 1.99 per cent, SBI declined by 1.69 per cent, Mahindra & Mahindra decreased by 1.50 per cent, Titan Company fell by 1.37 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the IT index was the biggest gainer, up by 2.89 per cent whereas, the telecom index was the biggest loser, down by 0.87 per cent. BSE Small-Cap index gained by 1.37 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 1.25 per cent.
