Sensex, Nifty gain; Kotak Mahindra Bank jumps 12 per cent, Shriram Transport Finance zooms 7 per cent

On Tuesday, Sensex gained by 376.60 points or by 0.94 per cent to close at 40,522.10 levels while Nifty was up by 121.65 points or 1.03 per cent at 11,889.40 levels.

While bulls took charge today, FMCG stocks and cement stocks gained during the afternoon session.

The shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank gained after the bank reported a better-than-expected rise of 26.27 per cent YoY in standalone profit at Rs 2,184.48 crore for Q2FY21. NII rose by 16.8 per cent YoY to Rs 3,913 crore in Q2FY21 from Rs 3,350 crore in Q2FY20.

On Tuesday, domestic Indian indices outperformed the global indices.

Asian indices such as Hang Seng and KOSPI declined by 0.53 per cent and 0.56 per cent, respectively while both, China’s Shanghai index and Japan’s Nikkei index, closed flat.

Meanwhile, European indices such as CAC 40 and DAX were trading lower by 1.09 per cent and 0.52 per cent, respectively while FTSE 100 was almost flat with a negative bias.

Indian Rupee ended at 73.71 per US dollar against its previous close of 73.85 per US dollar.

Sensex gainers included Kotak Mahindra Bank that went up by 12.17 per cent, Nestle India increased by 6.01 per cent, Asian Paints rose by 5.64 per cent, Bajaj Finance jumped 4.89 per cent, NTPC surged 4.13 per cent, Larsen & Toubro increased by 3.24 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of TCS that went down by 2.09 per cent, ONGC fell by 1.91 per cent, Infosys declined by 1.79 per cent, HDFC decreased by 1.66 per cent, SBI weakened by 1.09 per cent, ITC plunged 0.80 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries fell by 0.79 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, Bankex was the biggest gainer, up by 3.53 per cent. BSE Power Index gained by 2.06 per cent while BSE Healthcare Index rose by 1.53 per cent. On the other hand, BSE IT Index was the biggest loser, declining by 1.46 per cent, followed by BSE Realty Index, which fell by 0.65 per cent.

In broader markets, BSE Small-Cap Index closed in green, up by 0.60 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap Index jumped by 1.65 per cent.
