Sensex, Nifty close in red; Alembic zooms by nearly 9 per cent, SBI declines by more than 4 per cent

On Wednesday, Sensex closed at 38,193.92, declining by 171.43 points or 0.45 per cent while Nifty fell by 39.35 points or 0.35 per cent to settle at 11,278. In today’s session, banks, financial, and realty stocks witnessed a major sell-off.

The shares of IRCTC fell by 2.09 per cent after reports surfaced regarding the government’s intention to sell an additional 15-20 per cent stake in the company via offer for sale (OFS).

Indian markets remained on the edge during today’s trading session as a result of a huge sell-off seen in the US tech stocks and also, due to the setback to the clinical trial of AstraZeneca Plc for COVID-19.

Taking cues from the global markets, even though Asian indices declined; the positive opening of European markets brought some recovery in the domestic markets.

Asian indices such as Shanghai index, Hang Seng, Nikkei, and KOSPI fell by 1.86 per cent, 0.63 per cent, 1.04 per cent and 1.09 per cent, respectively. European indices such as FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40 gained by 0.79 per cent, 0.90 per cent and 0.49 per cent, respectively.

The top Sensex gainers included Tata Steel, which went up by 3.04 per cent, RIL gained by 2.57 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries increased by 1.40 per cent, Bharti Airtel gained by 1.33 per cent, Asian Paints increased by 1.27 per cent, Nestle India rose by 1.10 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of SBI that went down by 4.46 per cent, Bajaj Finserv fell by 3.29 per cent, Axis Bank declined by 2.94 per cent, ONGC decreased by 2.42 per cent, ITC fell by 2.23 per cent, Bajaj Finance plunged by 2.20 per cent, ICICI Bank declined by 2.17 per cent, etc.

Meanwhile, Bank Nifty declined by 2.10 per cent. In the broader markets, BSE Small-Cap index fell by 0.94 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap index declined by 0.28 per cent.
