Sensex, Nifty close in green; RIL plunges 9 per cent, HDFC Bank zooms over 6 per cent

After an eventful day, the domestic indices calmed down towards the closing bell. Sensex settled at 39,757.58 levels, up by 143.51 points or 0.36 per cent. Nifty rose by 26.75 points or 0.23 per cent to close at 11,669.15 levels.

During today’s trading session, the banking & financial stocks surged. In line with this, Bank Nifty jumped by nearly 5 per cent.

For Q2FY21, RIL reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 9,567 crore compared to the net profit of Rs 8,380 crore gained in Q1FY21. In spite of this, the shares of the company tumbled by 8.62 per cent.

Purchasing managers’ index (PMI) moved up to 58.9 in October 2020 compared to 56.8 in September 2020 thus, indicating a probability of speedy economic recovery. October’s PMI reportedly turned out to be the highest reading in over a decade.

Sensex gainers included IndusInd Bank that went up by 7.10 per cent, ICICI Bank soared by 6.25 per cent, HDFC surged by 6.24 per cent, Axis Bank jumped by 6.13 per cent, Bharti Airtel increased by 5.52 per cent, SBI rose by 3.57 per cent, Bajaj Finance rose by 3.25 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of RIL that went down by 8.62 per cent, HCL Technologies declined by 2.49 per cent, TCS fell by 2.29 per cent, Asian Paints fell by 1.85 per cent, Tata Steel decreased by 1.84 per cent, Bajaj Auto plunged by 1.49 per cent, Maruti Suzuki decreased by 1.33 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, Bankex was the biggest gainer, up by 4.17 per cent, followed by the telecom index and finance index, which surged by 3.84 per cent and 3.72 per cent, respectively. The energy index was the biggest loser, down by 7.12 per cent.

Meanwhile, broader markets remained mixed. BSE Small-Cap index closed down by 0.71 per cent whereas BSE Mid-Cap closed in green, up by 0.36 per cent.
