Sensex, Nifty close in green; ITC gains 3 per cent, Jindal Stainless jumps 19 per cent, Vedanta plunges 21 per cent

The domestic markets witnessed a volatile session on Monday, as Sensex fell by more than 300 points from the day’s high. Sensex gained by 84.31 points or 0.21 per cent to settle at 40,593.80 levels while Nifty closed up by 16.75 points or 0.14 per cent at 11,930.95 levels.

The shares of Vedanta declined by more than 20 per cent per share on Monday after the company reported that its proposed delisting offer has failed as only 125.7 crore shares were validly tendered at the close of the reverse book building process on Friday. The promoters were required to acquire 134 crore shares in order to raise their stake beyond 90 per cent for a successful delisting.

The IPO of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders became one of the most subscribed PSU IPO listed at a premium of around 49 per cent after investors piled into the share sale.

Sensex gainers included ITC that went up by 2.59 per cent, Infosys surged 2.23 per cent, Asian Paints gained by 1.29 per cent, HCL Technologies increased by 1.21 per cent, Power Grid gained by 1.14 per cent, Maruti rose by 1.07 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of Bharti Airtel that went down by 2.33 per cent, ONGC fell by 1.78 per cent, HDFC Bank declined by 1.65 per cent, IndusInd Bank decreased by 1.44 per cent, Bajaj Auto plunged 1.42 per cent, Nestle India declined by 0.90 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the IT index was the biggest gainer, up by 1.48 per cent while the Metal index was the biggest loser, down by 3.68 per cent. BSE Small-Cap index and BSE Mid-Cap index closed in red, down by 0.40 per cent and 0.48 per cent, respectively.
