Sensex falls by about 125 points; PNB Gilt stock shoots up

While putting an end to their gaining streak, domestic benchmark indices such as Nifty dropped by 32.45 points or 0.32 per cent to settle at the level of 10,029.10, whereas Sensex closed down by 128.84 points or 0.38 per cent at 33,980.70, in today's trading session.

Markets continued to remain volatile ahead of the F&O weekly expiry. In today's trading session, PNB Gilts' stock locked in 20 per cent upper circuit as the company declared a net profit of Rs 99 crore as against a net loss of Rs 7.7 crore for Q4FY19, while there was an increase in its revenue by 89 per cent YoY to Rs 276 crore for Q4FY20. Despite the economic conditions at present, aviation stocks witnessed buying, as InterGlobe Aviation's (IndiGo) stock rose by 9 per cent while SpiceJet's stock gained by almost 5 per cent.

Sensex winners included Bharti Airtel rallying by 5.62 per cent, Tech Mahindra gaining by 5.32 per cent, Sun Pharmaceuticals soaring by 4.40 per cent, HCL Technologies rising by 3.31 per cent, Power Grid which went up by 2.286 per cent, TCS rising by 2.43 per cent, RIL gaining by 2.18 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers comprised Asian Paints falling by 4.54 per cent, Bajaj Finance which fell by 4.10 per cent, HDFC dropping by 4.10 per cent, Kotak Mahindra Bank declining by 3.67 per cent, IndusInd Bank which fell by 3.47 per cent, Axis Bank decreasing by 3.34 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices of BSE, the biggest gainer was Telecom, up by 3.47 per cent, with indices such as TECK and IT increasing by 2.28 per cent and 1.86 per cent respectively, not too far behind. The biggest loser was BSE Finance index, dropping by 2.54 per cent. Amidst the broader indices, small-cap and mid-cap fell by 0.05 per cent and 0.06 per cent respectively.
