Sensex at new all-time high of 40345
The Indian benchmark index Sensex touched a new all-time high on Thursday, October 31, 2019, on intra-day basis. It broke its earlier record of 40312 which it had reached on 4 June 2014, reacting to the outcome of general elections. Sensex touched a new life time high of 40344.99.
The Indian equity markets were poised to break into a new record territory post the strong global cues and supportive domestic developments during early trade on Thursday. Index was topped by Infosys, SBI and Tata Motors which traded higher by 4.33 per cent, 4.29 per cent and 3.40 per cent intra-day. The market breadth gave further support to the positive sentiment. 21 out 30 Sensex stocks traded with gains. Nifty, though, is still about 200 points away from its all-time high.
Sensex and Nifty grew nearly 4 per cent each in October month itself. It clocked its best performance in FY20 till now. Index had fallen more than 10 per cent after clocking its earlier life time high in June. The market sentiment was primarily hit by the FPI surcharge which was announced in interim budget after general elections in July. It was further hit by slowdown woes, sluggish consumer demand sentiments etc.
The markets have reacted to the recently announced government reforms such as FPI tax rollback and cut in corporate tax rates, September 2019. Earnings of second quarter have also come up with few positive surprises against low expectations.
At 11.30 pm on Thursday, Sensex traded at 40309 with gains of 258 points and Nifty traded at 11919, up by 75 points.
