 Indian equity indices closed in red on Tuesday, driven by a sharp drop in IT stocks. The downturn follows concerns over potential U.S. reciprocal tariffs set to take effect on April 2. U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that these tariffs would apply to all countries, raising fears that escalating trade tensions could push the U.S. economy toward a recession.

The Sensex closed almost 1,400 points or 1.81 per cent lower at 77,016, while the Nifty 50 closed 353 points or 1.5 per cent lower at 23,519, the index crossed below 200-DEMA today. The Nifty Bank closed 737 points lower and settled at 50,827. The Indian benchmark indices recorded the highest one-day loss in the last 10 weeks since January 21st, 2025.
