At the closing bell on May 19, the Sensex closed worse off than it started the week with a loss pf of 2.6 per cent or 1416.30 points to close at 52,792.23, while the Nifty index shed 2.7 per cent or 431 points at 15,809.40.

On Thursday, the equity indices fell due to negative global indicators. All the sectoral indices of NSE ended in the red. All the stocks in the information technology, metals, and media sectors fell. Nifty closed just beyond 15,800 points. Due to the expiry of the weekly index options on NSE, trading was choppy. Nifty’s Information Technology index fell 5.74 per cent to 28,352.15. In just two trading sessions, the index has dropped 6.18 per cent. On Thursday, the European and Asian stock markets also fell. Futures on Dow Jones index were down by 423 points, signalling a bad start in the US stocks today.
