Nifty, Sensex at record high; Trident locks in at upper circuit, Alkyl Amines soars 15 per cent, Wockhardt tumbles

On Monday, the markets continued to touch record highs as Sensex gained by 307.82 points or by 0.64 per cent to settle at 48,176.80 levels while Nifty was up by 114.40 points or by 0.82 per cent closing at 14,132.90. In spite of a volatile trading session, Sensex managed to recover by nearly 582 points from the day’s low of 47,594.47  

During today’s trading session, various stocks witnessed a strong gaining momentum. The market breadth firmly stood in the favour of the advancers. IT stocks such as Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies, etc. gained on the expectation of positive Q3 numbers. ONGC and other oil companies inched up with higher crude.   

Metal stocks also added to today’s gains as Tata Steel surged 7.72 per cent while Hindalco jumped 6.61 per cent.  Metal stocks shone as a result of an increase in steel prices. 

India's manufacturing PMI index for December 2020 was stable at 56.4.

In the global markets, Asian indices such as Shanghai Composite index and Hang Seng gained 0.86 per cent and 0.89 per cent, respectively whereas Nikkei closed in red, down by 0.68 per cent. KOSPI held onto its record run for consecutive sessions now, gaining by 2.47 per cent on Monday on the basis of a strong positive global recovery cues based on improved global macroeconomic readings and trade in the export-driven countries.  

In the European markets, sentiments favoured the bulls with vaccine positivity, supporting investor confidence. Indices such as FTSE 100, DAX, and CAC 40 rose by 2.67 per cent, 1.25 per cent, and 1.75 per cent, respectively.  

Sensex gainers consisted of ONGC that gained 4.02 per cent, TCS rose by 3.79 per cent, HCL Technologies jumped 3.05 per cent, Infosys surged 2.23 per cent, Mahindra & Mahindra increased by 2.18 per cent, HUL inched higher by 1.64 per cent.  

Sensex losers included Kotak Mahindra Bank that declined by 1.43 per cent, Bajaj Finance fell by 1.21 per cent, Asian paints decreased by 0.73 per cent, HDFC Bank went down by 0.61 per cent, Power Grid declined by 0.61 per cent, Titan Company fell by 0.52 per cent, etc.  

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the metal index was the biggest gainer, surging by 5.34 per cent whereas Bankex was the biggest loser, down by 0.15 per cent. BSE IT index gained 2.71 per cent while BSE Auto index rose by 1.52 per cent.  

The broader markets outperformed as BSE Small-Cap index rose by 1.37 per cent while BSE Mid-Cap index gained 1.42 per cent.
