Market Close: Sensex posts 249 points gain
Markets were upbeat throughout the day on Monday. Initially, post the pre-market session, the markets had dipped, but they soon gained momentum and continued the upward rally. The BSE Sensex closed with 0.63 per cent gains. Mid-cap stocks joined the rally with RBL up 19 per cent and ABB and IGL posting around 10 per cent gains.
Sensex closed at 39,683.29, up by 248.57 points or 0.63 per cent and Nifty50 closed at 11,924.75, up by 80.65 points or 0.68 per cent on Monday. The advance decline ratio was in favour of advances with 31 stocks and 18 declines on NSE.
Index heavyweight HDFC Bank contributed most, 69.01 point to the Sensex gains, followed by HDFC 66.03 points, L&T 55.52 points, Axis Bank 32.70 points, while SBI, Tata Steel contributed more than 20 points each.
Among the top gainers on BSE Sensex were Tata Steel at Rs. 509.90 per share, up by 5.46 per cent, Yes Bank at Rs. 146.40, up by 3.61 per cent, NTPC at Rs. 133.55, up 3.37 per cent, L&T at Rs. 1,590.00, up by 3.00 per cent, Axis Bank at Rs. 813.50, up by 2.50 per cent and SBI at Rs. 360.60, up by 1.69 per cent. The loser were IndusInd Bank down by 2.11 per cent, followed by Reliance down by 1.74 per cent and Asian Paint down by Rs. 1,370, down by 1.12 per cent. ONGC, Airtel and Maruti were down more than 0.50 per cent on Monday.
Sectorally, the most traded index Nifty Bank surged closed at 31,620.70, up significantly by 408.15 points or 1.31 per cent. Nifty Metal and Realty continued their rally and were up by more than 2 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Pharma and Media were down by 0.97 and 0.83 per cent.
On Monday, mid-cap and small-caps stocks also joined the paty and Nifty Mid-cap 50 gained 1.79 per cent, while Nifty Mid-cap 100 gained 1.62 per cent, followed by Nifty Small-cap 100 up by 1.62 per cent.
Among the Mid-cap and small-caps that gained considerably in Monday's trading session were Avanti up 17 per cent, Navkar Corp up 15 per cent, Narayana Hrudayalaya up 13 per cent, Ashoka Buildcon up 13 per cent, EIHotel up by 11 per cent and Suprajit up by 10 per cent. Also up wereHoneywell up by 8.26 per cent, KIOCL up by 8.00, Symphony up by 7.21 per cent and Engineers India up 6.64 per cent. While those facing the heat were Manpasand Beverages down by 20 per cent, Page Industries down 10.43 per cent, Astra Zeneca down 8.56 per cent and PC Jeweller down 5.70 per cent.
