Market Close: Sensex, Nifty gain 1.6 per cent

The market experienced volatility during the early hours of trade on Friday, during the morning half market saw choppy trading, but as the day progressed the market breath was in favour of advances. ICICI Bank contributed most to the index gains, followed by L&T, HDFC Bank and SBI.

The BSE Sensex opened at 39,076.26 and hit a high and low of 39,476.97 and 38,824.26. At the closing, the index was at 39,434.72, up 1.61 per cent or 623.33 points. The Nifty50 Index closed at 11,844.10, up 187.05 points or 1.60 per cent.

The BSE Sensex stocks that performed their best in terms of gains included ICICI Bank (up 5.09 per cent), Larsen & Toubro (up 4.60 per cent) and Bharti Airtel (up 4.42 per cent). Meanwhile, the stocks that closed in red include NTPC (down 0.54 per cent), HCL Technologies (down 0.46 per cent), TCS (down 0.20 per cent) and Hindustan Unilever (down 0.10 per cent).

The S&P BSE Large Cap Index closed at 4,543.11, up 74.46 points or 1.67 per cent. Bank of Baroda (up 7.49 per cent) and Ashok Leyland (up 5.46 per cent) were amongst the many that closed in green. On the other hand, Bandhan Bank was down 2.59 per cent while Tech Mahindra was down 0.94 per cent.

The S&P BSE Mid Cap Index closed at 14,945.24, up 294.87 points or 2.01 per cent. Bank of India (up 8.75 per cent) and JSW Energy (up 8.71 per cent) were amongst the top stocks that closed in green. Contrarily, the bottom performers were GRUH Finance (down 4.42 per cent) and Sun TV (down 3.25 per cent).

The S&P BSE Small Cap Index closed at 14,699.56, up 346.63 points or 2.42 per cent. Avadh Sugar was up an impressive 20 per cent, while Uttam Sugar was up 19.30 per cent. Meanwhile, Just Dial and Jet Airways were down 7.49 per cent and 4.82 per cent, respectively.

At closing, the advance to decline ratio was at 4:1. During the day, 11 stocks hit their 52-week highs on the NSE which include City Union Bank, INOX Leisure, Kalpataru Power Transmission and Gokaldas Exports. In total, 31 shares were trading in the green in the Nifty50 Index while 19 were trading in the red. The top gainers include ZEEL, Larsen & Toubro and Hero MotoCorp.
