Larsen & Toubro flags-off final assembly of Cryostat

Larsen & Toubro has flagged-off the final assembly of Cryostat, the largest stainless steel, high-vacuum pressure chamber in the world.

Cryostat assembly, which is also referred to as the Top Lid, is to be installed with other Cryostat segments for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in a reactor pit in southern France. The base section, the lower cylinder and the upper cylinder for the cryostat have been already delivered by L&T. The cryostat provides cooling to the fusion reactor and keeps the high temperatures at its core under control. Firstly, the company manufactured assemblies at its Hazira complex. After that, it also constructed a temporary workshop at the project site in Cadarache (France) for the assembly of various sectors. Finally, it had to integrate Cryostat with Tokamak reactor building.

With this flag-off, L&T heavy engineering has completed the manufacturing work planned in India. The company’s heavy engineering business won this contract from ITER India, a wing of Department of Atomic Energy, for the ambitious mega scientific project, conducted in collaboration of seven elite countries, including India, along with a project outlay of around US$ 20 billion.

The stock closed at 944.05, up by 0.75 per cent or Rs 7.05 per share. The intraday high is Rs 952 and intraday low is Rs 931.45.
