It already has an impressive order book, which stands at Rs 3.99 trillion as of the financial year ending in March 2023.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), an esteemed Indian engineering and construction company, has achieved yet another significant milestone in the defense sector. In a momentous event held at the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi, L&T and Navantia, a renowned Spanish shipbuilding firm, signed a Teaming Agreement (TA) for the Indian Navy's prestigious P75 (India) submarine program.

The agreement, inked in the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Mr. S N Subrahmanyan, CEO & MD of L&T, and Mr. Augustin Alvarez Blanco, Vice President of Naval Construction and Member of the Board at Navantia, solidifies the partnership between the two companies. H.E. Mr. José María Ridao Domínguez, Ambassador of Spain in India, and Captain (Navy) Fernando Alvarez, Spanish Defence Attaché, also graced the occasion alongside senior officials from both L&T Defence and Navantia.

The P75 (I) submarine program is an esteemed venture for the Indian Navy, requiring the Indian bidder to collaborate with a foreign entity and deliver six state-of-the-art conventional submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP). This project, estimated to be valued at over Euro 4.8 billion, stands as India's largest defense acquisition endeavor. Furthermore, it will be accompanied by a 30-year lifecycle sustenance contract of similar value. P75(I) holds the distinction of being the first program processed under the Ministry of Defence's ambitious Strategic Partnership (SP) model of acquisition.

L&T and Navantia had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 11, 2023 in Madrid, which paved the way for this momentous Teaming Agreement. Navantia, drawing from its rich experience in naval construction, will undertake the design of P75(I) submarines based on its S80 class of submarines. The S80 class, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery to the Spanish Navy by the end of 2023, has already undergone sea trials. Additionally, Navantia has played a crucial role in the design and construction of the Scorpène class of submarines in collaboration with DCNS (now Naval Group) of France, which have been exported to Chile and Malaysia. Navantia has also provided valuable assistance in the building of Scorpène submarines (Kalvari class) in India, including handholding of the Indian shipyard.

A notable aspect of the P75(I) program is the integration of an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, and Navantia's cutting-edge 3rd Generation AIP solution stands out as the most advanced, efficient, and environmentally friendly system in the world. This state-of-the-art AIP system utilizes bioethanol as a source of hydrogen, offering cost efficiency, easy availability, and eliminating the need for special infrastructure. The high hydrogen density in ethanol significantly enhances the efficiency of the AIP system, while the liquid form of ethanol eliminates the associated risks of storing hydrogen. Moreover, the wide availability of ethanol enables the system to be refueled anywhere across the globe.

Beyond the P75(I) submarine program, L&T and Navantia are exploring avenues for cooperation in other military initiatives and green energy opportunities, including offshore wind through Navantia Seanergies division. This collaboration extends beyond defense and demonstrates the mutual interest in technological advancements and sustainable solutions.

Commenting on this significant achievement, Mr. S N Subrahmanyan, CEO & MD of L&T, expressed his pride in collaborating with Navantia for this crucial program, highlighting Navantia's 300-year-old legacy in naval construction and technical expertise. He also emphasized L&T's commitment to providing the Indian Navy with the most contemporary solution that meets their requirements while maintaining competitive pricing. This collaboration positions L&T as a key player in the defense sector, bolstering its already impressive order book, which stands at Rs 3.99 trillion as of the financial year ending in March 2023. The company's strong performance is further reflected in its remarkable returns of 44 percent in the past year and over 150 percent in the past three years.

As Larsen & Toubro continues to secure prestigious orders and strengthen its position as a leading engineering and construction conglomerate, this partnership with Navantia exemplifies the company's unwavering commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions and contributing to India's defense capabilities.
