Short covering refers to buying back borrowed securities in order to close out an open short position at a profit or loss.
After a flat opening on Friday, the Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty50 gave up early gains in a volatile session. Selling in IT and financial stocks compensated for the gains in oil & gas and metal shares.
Sensex is trading lower by 148.97 points or 0.24 per cent at the 60,687.44 level, while Nifty is down 32.20 points or 0.18 per cent at 18,020.50. Top Gainers on the Sensex include Indian Overseas Bank, up by 10.5 per cent, Amara Raja Batteries Ltd, up by 10.29 per cent and Action Construction Equipment Ltd, surging by 8.24 per cent. Top Losers of the session are Ajanta Pharma Ltd, down by 6.91 per cent, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, down by 3.84 per cent and KSB Ltd, down by 3.59 per cent.
