The key equity indices closed with modest gains on July 22, 2022 (Friday). While IT, healthcare & pharma equities declined, the shares of financial services, banks, and FMCG companies were in high demand.  

S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, soared 390 points to 56,072.23. Nifty 50 index rose 114 points and closed at 16,719 levels. The domestic equity benchmarks underperformed the broader market as S&P BSE Smallcap index surged 56 points and ended at 26,773. On the other hand, S&P BSE Midcap index dropped 40 points to the level of 23,660.  

The market breadth was strong as 1,781 shares increased and 1,541 shares decreased on BSE. Besides, 147 shares were unchanged. As European Central Bank increased interest rates more than anticipated on Thursday, the markets in Europe rose broadly while Asian stocks ended the day neutral. The benchmark deposit rate at ECB was increased by 50 basis points. It was the first rate increase by Euro Zone's central bank in eleven years. ECB also raised its primary refinancing rate to 0.50 per cent, ending an eight-year experiment with negative interest rates and predicted additional rate increases, maybe as soon as its next meeting on September 8.
