Closing bell: Sensex slips 359 points, ends the day in red; Nifty closes below 16,600
On Tuesday, most European indices fell as strong German inflation statistics rekindled concerns about central banks' monetary tightening tempo.
On Tuesday, the benchmark indices concluded the day with minor losses, ending the three-day winning trend. Real estate, media, and metals stocks rose while PSU banks, financial services, and oil & gas stocks fell. Dow Jones Futures plunged 210 points, signalling that the US stock market may open lower today.
On Tuesday, most European indices fell as strong German inflation statistics rekindled concerns about central banks' monetary tightening tempo. Brent crude for July 2022 settlement was trading at $123.83 a barrel, up by $4.40 or 3.68 per cent.
BSE Sensex closed at 55,566 levels, sinking by 359 points. On the contrary, BSE Midcap index increased by 112 points to end the day at 23,143 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap dropped 178 points to close at 26,370 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were Power Grid Corporation of India, NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, and ITC. However, the Top Losers were Infosys, Sun Pharmaceutical, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, and State Bank of India.
Nifty 50 ended on a negative note at 16,584 levels with a gain of 76 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty dropped 339 points and closed the day at 35,487 levels. The top gaining stocks were ONGC, NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Coal India, and Tata Consumer. The top losing stocks today were Kotak Mahindra Bank, Sun Pharmaceutical, HDFC, Reliance Industries, and Shree Cement.
The total stocks traded today were 3,477, out of which, 1,766 advanced and 1,583 stocks declined. There were 128 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 280 while the number of stocks that closed in the lower circuit today was 236. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 73 while there were 55 stocks that made a fresh 52-week low today.
