Closing Bell: Sensex loses 537 points, Nifty hovers around 17,000

On Wednesday, the equity indices lost ground during a tumultuous trading session.

On Wednesday, the equity indices lost ground during a tumultuous trading session. All NSE sectoral indices ended in the red, with the exception of the media index. The imminent LIC IPO and weak global cues prompted an exodus of equity. Today, the European stocks were trading higher. The bulls in today's session were IIFL Securities, Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd, Bombay Dyeing, KPIT Technologies, Ruchi Soya, and Adani Power.  

  

BSE Sensex closed in red, falling by 537 points to the 56,819 mark. Sensex Midcap index also weakened by 216 points to end the day at 24,413 levels. BSE Smallcap index plunged 176 points to close at 28,742 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were Tata Steel, Asian Paints, HCL Technologies, TCS, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. However, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, Wipro, and Titan have all seen their stock prices tumble.  

   

Nifty 50 dropped 162 points and ended at 17,038 levels. Likewise, Bank Nifty slipped 375 points and closed the day at 36,028 levels. The top gaining stocks were Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel, Asian Paints, HCL Technologies, and Eicher Motors. The stocks losing the most were Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Consumer, Adani Ports, and Shree Cement.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,485, out of which, 1,173 advanced and 2,197 stocks declined. There were 115 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 227 while 235 stocks closed in the lower circuit today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 141 and there were 29 stocks that made a fresh 52-week low today.
