Closing Bell: Sensex and Nifty continue to lose ground; global markets remain weak

On Monday, the benchmark indices remained in the negative region. The barometers fell further for the second day in a row. During the day, metal and FMCG were among the major losers. Dow Jones index futures in the United States were down by 398 points, implying a bad start to the day for US stocks. On Monday, the European markets fell along with most Asian markets as investors worried about the country's chronically high inflation rate.
BSE Sensex closed in the red, losing on the second day by 364 points to end at 54,470 levels. BSE Midcap index plunged 364 points to end the day at 22,692 levels. BSE Smallcap index too dropped 451 points to close at 26,641 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were HCL Technologies, Power Grid Corporation of India, Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, and Bajaj Finance. However, stocks that witnessed a fall in their price include Reliance Industries, Induslnd Bank, Nestle India, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, and State Bank of India.
Nifty 50 ended at 16,301 levels, sliding only by 109 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty ended with a fall of 315 points and closed the day at 34,275 levels. The top gaining stocks were Power Grid Corporation of India, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Bajaj Auto, and Divi’s Laboratories. The stocks losing the most were Reliance Industries, Nestle India, Hero MotoCorp, Induslnd Bank, and Tata Steel.
The total stocks traded today were 3,614, out of which, 1,047 advanced and 2,417 stocks declined. There were 150 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 230 while 362 stocks touched their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that made a new 52-week high is 103 while 133 stocks hit a fresh 52-week low today.
