Closing Bell: Indices halt three-day losing streak, Nifty scales 17200
Even with a weak start, the benchmark indices closed in green. Metals, banks and auto buoyed the market.
Today the gaining sectors were Oil & Gas, Metal, and Bankex. Other the other hand the sector which dragged down the index were Consumer Durables, Information Technology, and Healthcare. The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market volatility went down by 3.50 per cent to 22.61 levels.
The BSE Sensex rose by 231 points down to close in green at 57,593. Whereas, the BSE Midcap index has fallen today by 94 points and ended the day at 23,695 levels, while BSE Smallcap had a downfall of 147 points and ended at 27,653. On the BSE Sensex, the top stocks were Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, and Induslnd Bank. On the other hand, the top losers were Nestle India, HDFC, HCL Technologies, Asian Paints, and Wipro.
The Nifty 50 index after opening in red closed in the green territory by 69 points and at 17,222 levels. Bank Nifty jumped by 300 points and ended the day at 35,710. The top winning stocks were Bharti Airtel, Eicher Motors, Axis Bank, Coal India, and ICICI Bank. The major losing stocks were UPL, SBI Life Insurance, Nestle India, HDFC, and HDFC Life Insurance.
The total stocks traded today were 3,664 out of which 1,171 advanced and 2,338 stocks declined, 155 stocks were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit are 311 and 423 stocks were locked in the lower circuit today. The numbers of stocks that have made a 52-week high are 161 and 87 stocks made a 52-week low today.
