Closing bell: Indices end six-day losing trend; broader markets outperform

After a tumultuous session on Friday, the domestic equity indices ended near the day's low

The barometers finished slightly higher, halting the six-day losing trend. Buying pressure was seen in banking, real estate & auto stocks while selling pressure was seen in the IT and FMCG companies. The share of Avenue Supermarts (D-Mart) soared 10 per cent. The stock of Eicher Motors jumped 7.75 per cent. Balkrishna Industries rose 8.11 per cent after reporting a 36 per cent increase in the net revenue.   

  

After a tumultuous session on Friday, the domestic equity indices ended near the day's low. A sharp sell-off in the final hour of the trading session wiped out all profits and pushed the global benchmarks down. Sectors in green were the auto, FMCG, and pharmaceutical industries while metal, financial services & banking sectors ended in the red.   

   

BSE Sensex closed on a positive note today, climbing 180 points to close at 52,973 levels. BSE Midcap index too jumped 329 points to end the day at 22,145 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap index has increased by 290 points to close at 25,605 levels. The top gainers on BSE Sensex today were NTPC, Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. However, the Top Losers include UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, ITC, Tech Mahindra, and TCS.   

   

Nifty 50 ended at 15,842 levels, higher by just 60 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty improved by 476 points and closed the day at 33,597 levels. The top gaining stocks were Eicher Motors, Apollo Hospitals, UPL, NTPC, and State Bank of India. The top losing stocks were Shree Cement, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, ITC, and Divi’s Laboratories.   

   

The total stocks traded today were 3,577, out of which, 2,232 advanced and 1,165 stocks declined. There were 180 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 378 while 218 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 67 while 98 stocks hit a fresh 52-week low today.
