Benchmark indices Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex rose sharply on January 31 driven by short-covering ahead of the Union Budget presentation on February 1. The BSE Sensex closed in green at 58,014.17 jumping by 1.42 per cent. Similarly, the BSE MidCap also rose by 426 points to a level of 24,613 points i.e. by 1.76 per cent. The BSE SmallCap index also surge by 286 points and landed at 29,226 levels up by 0.99 per cent.
The top gainers on BSE Sensex were Amber Enterprises India, Route Mobile, INFO EDGE (INDIA), Gujarat Fluorochemicals gained more than 10 per cent each. Whereas the top losers on the index were Uti Asset Management Company, Apar Industries, Spicejet, Care Ratings, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation all recording more than 5.5 per cent fall each.
The total stocks traded today were 3,686 out of which 1,859 advanced and 1,675 stocks declined, 152 stocks were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit are 456 and the number of stocks that were locked in the lower circuit today were 404.
The BSE Realty, Consumer Durables and Information Technology sector were the major sector gaining more than 3.17, 2.50 and 2.70 per cent, respectively.
