Closing Bell: Headline indices extend losses; bank stocks decline
Indian market fluctuated between gains and losses throughout today’s session before settling lower.
Banks, financials and consumer durable shares declined while metal, IT, pharma and oil & gas stocks advanced. The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market volatility went down by 3.30 per cent to 23.93 levels.
The Nifty 50 index ended in red dropping by 22 points and closing at 17,222 levels. Bank Nifty has also plummeted by 620 points and ended the day at 35,527. The top winning stocks were Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Coal India, UltraTech Cement, Hindalco Industries, and JSW Steel. The major losing stocks were Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and HDFC.
The Sensex settled at 57,595 falling by 89 points. On the other hand, the Sensex MidCap index has increased by 81 points and ended the day at 23,875 levels, the BSE SmallCap has sunk by 45 points and closed at 27,892 at day end. On the BSE Sensex today the top stocks were Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement, Reliance Industries, and Tech Mahindra. On the other hand, the top losers were Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank.
The total stocks traded today were 3,505 out of which 1,445 advanced and 1,939 stocks declined, 121 stocks were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit are 285 and 250 stocks were locked in the lower circuit today. The numbers of stocks that have made a 52-week high are 113 and 35 stocks made a 52-week low today.
