Closing Bell: Broader markets witness a severe sell-off with IT companies falling for the second day

BSE Sensex closed with a loss on the second day, falling by 303 points to close at 53,749 levels.

After a tumultuous session on Wednesday, the domestic equity indices ended near the day's low. IT, PSU banks, metals, and real estate companies concluded the day with big losses but private banks & financials managed to finish the day in the green. On Wednesday, European and Asian stocks rose across the board.  

BSE Sensex closed with a loss on the second day, falling by 303 points to close at 53,749 levels. BSE Midcap index too dipped 430 points to end the day at 21,829 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap index plunged 760 points to close at 25,123 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were NTPC, Bharti Airtel, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Nestle India. However, the Top Losers were Asian Paints, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, and Larsen & Toubro.  

Nifty 50 ended in red at 16,025 levels with a decline of 99 points. On the contrary, Bank Nifty increased 49 points and closed the day at 34,339 levels. The top gaining stocks were NTPC, HDFC Life Insurance, SBI Life Insurance, Bharti Airtel, and ONGC. The top losers today were Asian Paints, Adani Ports, Divi’s Laboratories, UPL, and Tech Mahindra.  

The total stocks traded today were 3,444, out of which, 715 advanced and 2,612 stocks declined. There were 117 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 158 while 390 stocks touched their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 67 while 155 stocks made a fresh 52-week low today.
