The metals, industrials, and energy were among the worst-performing sectors, which fell more than 1.5 per cent each. The market opened on a negative note thereby, reflecting the worldwide market weakness caused due to the selling pressure from foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who were concerned about growing inflation and interest rate hikes. Tech Mahindra, Reliance, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, and Induslnd Bank are among the worst performers.  

  

S&P BSE Sensex nosedived by 604 points to 54,231.34 at 10.35 am. S&P BSE Midcap index also plunged 345 points and trades at 22,783.72 levels. S&P BSE Smallcap tumbled 403 points and trades at 26,688.54 levels. Sensex Top Gainers include Bajaj Finserv (1.37 per cent), Power Grid Corporation of India (1.36 per cent), HCL Technologies (1.30 per cent), Bajaj Finance (0.23 per cent), and Infosys (0.75 per cent).   

   

Nifty 50 index dropped sharply by 174 points and is trading at 16,236.30 levels. Bank Nifty also saw a huge decline of 464 points at a level of 34,126.85. The top gainers on Nifty 50 are UPL (1.36 per cent), Bajaj Finserv (1.31 per cent), Bajaj Auto (1.31 per cent), HCL Technologies (1.21 per cent), and Power Grid Corporation of India (1.17 per cent).   

   

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 5,517.08 crore on May 6 while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 3,014.85 crore.
