Closing Bell: Sensex slips below 58,600, Nifty tanks below 17,550; broader market tumbles too

After a dull session on Tuesday, the domestic equities barometers concluded with heavy losses.

After a dull session on Tuesday, the domestic equities barometers concluded with heavy losses. Nifty fell below 17,550 points. Metals, information technology, and oil & gas equities fell the most. NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, moved up by 0.62 per cent to 18.16 levels. European markets mostly edged lower on Monday.  

  

BSE Sensex continued its journey in the red zone, falling by 388 points to 58,576 points. Sensex Midcap index has declined 369 points to end the day at 25,037. In the same way, BSE Smallcap index dropped by 438 points to close at 29,441 levels. ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Induslnd Bank, and Axis Bank were the Top Gainers on BSE Sensex today. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, Wipro, and Tata Steel were the Top Losers today.  

  

Nifty finished below 17,600 levels at 17,530, dipping by 144 points. Bank Nifty, on the flip side, gained 133 points and closed the day at 37,747. The top gaining stocks were Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Induslnd Bank, and Power Grid Corporation of India. The stocks losing the most were Hindalco Industries, Coal India, Grasim Industries, Tata Motors, and Tata Steel.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,516, out of which, 1,173 advanced and 2,249 stocks declined. There were 94 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 282 while 159 stocks got locked in their lower circuit. The number of stocks that have made a fresh 52-week high is 179 while nine stocks made a new 52-week low today.
